What is the Sawyer PointONE Filter?

The Sawyer PointONE is a point-of-use household water treatment system built around medical-grade 0.1-micron absolute hollow-fiber capillary membrane technology (derived from kidney dialysis filtration).

The filter assembly attaches to any standard 20-Liter food-grade bucket or container. Under simple gravity pressure (with zero electricity or replacement cartridges), dirty water flows through microscopic U-shaped microtubes whose pore diameter is 0.1 microns (100 nanometers).

Log Removal Performance

The Backwashing Cleaning Mechanism & 10-Year Lifespan

Unlike ceramic pot filters or granular activated carbon cartridges that clog permanently and require frequent replacement every 6–12 months, the Sawyer PointONE is engineered to be indefinitely backwashed.

When flow rate slows due to trapped sediment on the outer tube walls, the user fills the included 60mL cleaning syringe with clean water, presses it firmly against the outlet nozzle, and forcibly injects water in reverse. The reverse pressure dislodges all trapped silt and bacteria, restoring 98–100% of original flow rate.

A single filter unit can process over 1,000,000 Liters of water, providing an operational lifespan exceeding 10 years for an average family.


Technical Limitations & Crucial Engineering Rules

  • Dissolved Heavy Metals & Salinity: Physical hollow-fiber membranes CANNOT remove dissolved chemical ions (such as Fluoride, Arsenic, Lead, Nitrates, or dissolved salt TDS). In high-fluoride volcanic rift zones or saline coastal aquifers, Sawyer filters must be paired with reverse osmosis, bone char media, or pure rainwater harvesting.
  • Extreme Turbidity Pre-Settling: In water with heavy mud ($>50\text{ NTU}$), the filter will require backwashing every 5 liters. Users must be trained on a two-bucket settling system (letting turbid water settle with moringa seed or alum for 2 hours before passing through the filter).
